When the weather’s frightful outside, nothing compares to cozying up with a down comforter. Comforters from Cloud Nine Comforts, available at Somnia, are light and airy with enough loft (or thickness) to hold in warmth. Cloud Nine’s Polish and Siberian goose down fills are clean (washed at least ten times) and hypoallergenic. You can choose from four types of fills. In addition, down weights can be personalized by adding or subtracting ounces to accommodate body temperature and local climate.

Spring has sprung across this merry floral bedding by Company C. The Mayfield quilt, made of 100 percent cotton, offers a lightweight layer on the bed. The ecru, 100 percent cotton sheets and pillows feature a colorful array of embroidered polka dots on the cuffs. At the head of the bed, the dotted Gigi pillow, finished in white piping, comes in seven mouthwatering colors and coordinates with many of Company C’s patterned fabrics. Two Windowpane plaid pillows, in periwinkle and mango, feature their namesake pattern in white on yarn-dyed linen. In front, the Jubilee Stripe pillow, made of linen and cotton, offers a splash of color with its multihued stripes and bands of textured boucle yarns.

Garnet Hill’s flannel bedding gets rave reviews, and not just for comfort and warmth. The vibrant color and contemporary design of the Del Mar Floral Supima bedding offers evidence that spring can show up a few months early. Made of American-grown Supima cotton and brushed on both sides, the bedding is soft and woven to reduce pilling.

Anichini, located in Vermont, sources its sumptuous voile, silk twill and sateens in Italy, with a keen attention to detail. This vibrant sheet and pillow cover set, from the company’s Persia sheeting collection, is made from 100 percent Egyptian cotton and features woven jacquard borders in a striped sateen. The sheets are complemented by yarn-dyed matelassé coverlets and pillow shams in intricate paisley patterns from Anichini’s Tibet Matelassé collection.

Texture is evident in these pillows from Anichini. The top pillow is covered in a linen/velvet fabric called Velluto. The second pillow is an Italian brocade, Tasmania, with a paisley pattern. The bottom pillow—made from silk—evokes Anichini’s new Sitara silk collection, a line of colored, lightweight dupioni silks made in India. The cashmere throw is hand-loomed in Nepal and available in an array of colors.

As the snow flies and temperatures drop, we in New Hampshire are reminded once again of the warmth of home. Aside from relaxing in an overstuffed chair by a roaring fire, few comforts match the feeling of a snug, well-made bed, piled high with pillows and perhaps topped with a comforting throw.

The colorful bedding on the next pages features fabric and textures that are not only beautiful to look at and wonderful to touch, but also functional. Brian Gahan-owner of Somnia, an upscale bedding and accessories store in Portsmouth-says comfortable bedding has universal appeal, because "you always want a soft, warm nest" to sleep in.

"There's nothing better to me than an incredibly soft bed," Gahan says. "The way your sheets and blankets feel is more important than the way they look." All of this bedding, from the Garnet Hill fleece sheets to the Tourance throw, will make you feel all the better about feathering your own nest this winter.
