Evergreen Garden Open

Jun 1, 2018 to Jun 3, 2018
05:15 PM

Evergreen, the woodland garden created by landscape designer Robert Gillmore, will hold its 25th annual public opening June 1-3.

The one-acre garden is always open on the first weekend of June because that's when its sweeps of 220 Catawba rhododendrons are in bloom.

Evergreen is an "idealized" woodland of mature white pines--some of them 3 feet wide at the base--broadleaf evergreen shrubs, colorful evergreen ground covers, and other shade-loving plants.

The garden is ringed with berms--some of them 12 feet high and all of them planted with rhododendrons--which screen the garden from neighboring houses.

The sloping site also has a seasonal cascading brook with pools, a quarter-mile of paths, and outdoor rooms defined by granite boulders, berms, and plants.

The White Room is named for its sweeps of 'Emerald Gaiety' euonymus and white variegated hosta, the Gold Room for its carpets of 'Emerald 'n Gold' euonymus and Vinca minor 'Illumination.'

Gillmore is the author of The Woodland Garden and Beauty All Around You: How to Create Large Private Low-Maintenance Gardens, Even on Small Lots and Small Budgets.
