A contemporary kitchen with a natural touch

Timeless details make this open-plan North Hampton kitchen warm and inviting. The homeowners worked with designer Linda Cloutier of Linda Cloutier Kitchens & Baths, LLC in Greenland and Powell Builders, LLC in North Hampton to create a comfortable space with personal touches.

Seth and Amy Bostock’s kitchen is a vision in white and warm wood tones. Simple in style, this inviting space boasts plenty of storage and personal touches.

“We didn’t want an enormous kitchen,” Amy says, “just an open space where we could comfortably gather with family and friends.” With this priority in mind, the North Hampton homeowners collaborated with designer Linda Cloutier, of Linda Cloutier Kitchens & Baths, LLC in Greenland, to create “something unique, relaxing and functional.”

The kitchen opens to a dining and living area. The Bostocks selected simple accessories and a neutral color palette so the space flows with the entire house. “There isn’t a lot of color in the room,” Cloutier says, “but there is so much warmth thanks to the barstools, oak flooring and dining room table. It’s a clean and fresh design that is pleasing to the eye.”

The ceramic tile plank backsplash adds visual interest. The white finishing board on the outside of the island repeats this “plank-look”.

Off-white Brookhaven cabinetry by Wood-Mode was selected for its special-purpose units and ease of use. Drawers, made of solid maple, provide wide storage with soft-close action. Glassware is easy to spot behind wire-mesh inset cabinet doors. And, an island topped with walnut provides additional space for pots and pans.

To add character, Amy came up with the idea of using rectangular ceramic tile planks—that have the look of timeworn wood—as a backsplash. This feature effortlessly pulls the room’s various wood tones together. “These tiles are meant for the floor,” Amy says. “I didn’t want a standard subway tile, so I asked our flooring installer if it was possible to install these tiles on the wall, and it worked!” Other distinct details include granite countertops with a leather finish and frosted sliding pantry doors—a feature Cloutier describes as “a little retro.”

Overall, the Bostocks are thrilled with their new kitchen, describing the project as “a labor of love.” “We did all the things that I had in my head, and then wrote down and drew,” Amy says. “Linda was open to our ideas and really wanted our kitchen to be something that we envisioned, rather than a project she could put her stamp on. It was cool to see it all come together.”
