The family thought the location of a ramshackle boat shed on their property would be ideal for storing their kayaks and canoes as well as serving as the new study. Because the nearby brook runs clear and cold throughout the year, the project evolved to include a sauna—something that had been on the family’s wish list for many years.

This led to a design with a central open space where firewood and boats could be stored, flanked by an office and sauna. Local, rough-sawn pine was used for all framing and sheathing materials, with red-cedar shingles for the exterior siding and red-cedar, hand-split shakes on the roof.

Judges said: This is a beautiful, practical and highly crafted small structure. It has a great overall shape and is very nicely detailed.
