An Open, Light-Filled Kitchen

Sunsets over Great Bay are visible most days from Laura and Chris Rogers’s light-filled kitchen.
Designed by Linda Cloutier, of Linda Cloutier Kitchens & Baths, LLC in Greenland—who also worked with Don Cook, of D.D. Cook Builders in Greenland, and interior designer Becky Corringham, of Wysteria Design in Dover—the airy space flows easily into the Rogers’ dining and family rooms. “We wanted space to entertain, and have family and friends feel like they’re all together,” Laura says.
Cloutier, who worked on a prior renovation for the family, focused on creating a kitchen that was open and welcoming. “They wanted a lot of storage and room to move around,” she says.
Sleek, white cabinets line the walls; glass-fronted upper cabinets echo the design of the kitchen windows, visually breaking up the space. Counters, including the island, are topped in a blue leathered granite, a cool contrast to the subway tile backsplash and Italian glass mosaic over the cooktop. The stainless-steel appliances, including a French door oven, are easily reached from anywhere in the room.
The island, painted a soft blue in contrast to the cabinetry, provides storage and informal seating.
The back of the island—easily accessible to the dishwasher—has drawers for storing tableware, a separator for trays and cookie sheets, and under-the-counter space for a microwave. Additional cabinets for storing appliances are accessed on the front of the island.
A casual dining area next to the kitchen is highlighted by a distinctive chandelier from Hubbardton Forge in Castleton, Vermont. A custom-built wine and beverage bar, designed by Cloutier, extends the entertainment space into the family room. The dark mahogany unit has a recycled-glass countertop, and includes a wine and beverage refrigerator as well as slideout shelving.
In a nod to Chris’s desire for energy efficiency (the home has a geothermal heating system and solar panels), LED lighting is used throughout the kitchen: in the ceiling, under cabinets and in the upper cabinets.
Laura’s favorite spot is the kitchen island. “So many people can sit at it,” she says. “It has so much storage, and everyone comments on how beautiful it is.” An added advantage: looking through the kitchen window behind the island, she can see the couple’s vegetable garden as well as catch occasional glimpses of hawks, orioles, even a fox. It’s the perfect complement to a perfectly designed kitchen.

Topped with leathered granite, the large kitchen island accommodates diners and provides an open view of the living areas. All lighting is LED.
Appliances and the island are thoughtfully placed for the cook’s convenience, easily accessible to the sink and wall ovens.
