Bath Showcase: Natural High
At the end of the day, who wouldn’t want to relax in a soothing, spa-like environment? Creating such a space was the task presented to designer Kevin Roy of KRB Kitchen & Bath Design Center in Stratham. “The bathroom needed to be updated, and the client wanted something classic and timeless but also relaxing and rejuvenating. We faced few structural challenges, so the focus was on creating the look and feel that she desired.”
The experience starts with the freestanding soaking tub, positioned in its own niche, with a large picture window framing views of nature. The walls are clad in blue and white floral wallpaper that continues into the main bath, while nearby open shelving places amenities close at hand. A cheerful Buddha residing on one shelf adds to the peaceful vibes.
Directly above the tub, a light fixture resembling a cloud of bubbles brings a touch of whimsy into the room.
The adjacent shower is a gleaming mix of glass and white-and-gold-veined porcelain that simulates marble. Inside the shower, the lower porcelain portion is built out to create natural shelving within the unit. There’s a multi-spray head and rainbath, while a separate steam shower is adjacent to the main bath. Porcelain flooring stays true to the cool white palette.
To give the bath both texture and brightness, Roy artfully blended matte and polished finishes—gold in the marble, brushed gold fixtures in the shower and sinks, vanity drawer pulls and sconces. Inside the shower, a row of vertical glass tiles creates a unique accent panel.
The custom-made walnut vanity with quartz top filling one wall is a hallmark of marrying classic design with state-of-the-art function. Crafted to look like furniture, the flush inset design allows it to recess completely into the wall space allotted. There is extensive storage on the bottom half and also in the two slender closets flanking the sinks. Electrical outlets are tucked inside these closets. The quartz top also extends inside. “The client can both store and use razors, toothbrushes and hair dryers simply by opening these doors,” points out Roy. “The rest of the time everything is hidden, and there is no clutter on the countertops.”
Recessed lighting at the top of the vanity provides illumination, along with the up/down sconces. “The client is very pleased with the renovation,” says Roy. “I’ve been doing projects for them since 1998—they were among my first clients! It was nice to create this calming space for them to enjoy.”
