How to design a rustic, yet modern, kitchen

Peter Ippedico of Crown Point Cabinetry in Claremont guided the design for this Langdon farmhouse kitchen, where rustic details and reclaimed materials mix with bold paint colors and contemporary storage systems, such as a Kesseböhmer Magic Corner. “The space is quite eclectic,” Ippedico says.

In Langdon, a spacious farmhouse kitchen, full of locally made items and salvaged materials, is now well organized thanks to custom cabinetry by Crown Point Cabinetry in Claremont. Crown Point direct sales designer Peter Ippedico worked closely with the homeowners to customize a unique and eye-catching set of handcrafted cabinetry that complements his clients’ country lifestyle as well as their home’s rustic décor and architecture. “There are a lot of interesting and unique twists and turns throughout this kitchen,” Ippedico says.
Simple in design, the kitchen’s cabinetry consists of several space-saving built-ins and an island painted in Farrow & Ball’s Olive. The cabinetry’s oval-shaped knobs with a satin nickel finish add a charming touch. Equally striking are the bar’s upper cabinets with chicken-wire panels; the stained-clear pine backsplash completes the rustic look.
Beyond the cabinetry, the kitchen’s décor consists of special pieces from the homeowners’ chicken and owl collections. A rusty, barbed-wire wreath—salvaged from a metal recycling bin—also adorns the space.
Other unique features include the kitchen’s bead-board cathedral ceiling; the exposed hemlock and white pine beams came from the property and were milled locally in Drewsville. Beams from the property’s old carriage barn were also salvaged and innovatively used as the kitchen island’s posts.
